FUNDING: Letters of Intent Due Nov 7, Impact of The Purpose Prize

Dear APA Division 20 members,

My name is Cal Halvorsen and I'm the research manager at Encore.org, the new name for Civic Ventures. I am contacting you to let you know about our newest research project to evaluate the impact of our flagship program, The Purpose Prize. (To learn more about The Prize, visit www.encore.org/prize.)

The Prize, now in its seventh year, is the nation's only large-scale investment in people over 60 who are combining their passion and experience for the social good. Although there have been some previous studies on The Prize, we are now interested in conducting research that measures the accumulated impact of The Prize over the life of the program. We have released a Call for Letters of Intent, which you can view by visiting the following webpage: www.encore.org/files/PrizeResearchLOI.pdf

The three-page maximum Letters of Intent are due by Wednesday, November 7, by 5 p.m. Eastern. A more detailed timeline and description of the work is in the document.

Please forward this Call for Letters of Intent to anyone who might be interested in applying. If you have any questions about the process, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. With warm regards,

STUDENTS: PhD Program in Applied Developmental Sciences at Colorado State University

Dear Colleague:

We would like to ask for your assistance in passing along information about our program to any undergraduate or Master’s level students who are currently exploring opportunities for doctoral degree programs, and who have an interest in adult development and aging.

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University has a newly formed PhD program in Applied Developmental Sciences, and an ongoing Master’s program in Family and Developmental Studies.  We are currently accepting applications from students who want to pursue graduate studies with a focus on adult development and aging, either at the Master’s or PhD level.

Our program provides strong mentoring, excellent research training, and a positive and energetic learning environment with collegial faculty-student relations. The faculty who specialize in adult development and aging are (in alphabetical order):

Allison Bielak – Dr. Bielak’s research focuses on the differentiation between normal and pathological changes in adulthood, and how lifestyle factors such as physical, social, and cognitive activities may influence cognitive changes with age.  She is also interested in how moment-to-moment fluctuations in cognitive speed relates to cognitive ability, health and possible dementia prediction.  Dr. Bielak’s research lab is the Healthy Cognitive Aging Lab, which can be visited at http://www.hcal.cahs.colostate.edu/

Allison.Bielak@ColoState.edu

Manfred Diehl – Dr. Diehl’s research focuses, broadly speaking, on social-emotional development across the adult lifespan. His research includes work on risk and resilience factors in coping with daily stress, the development of coping and emotion regulation strategies across the adult lifespan, and aspects of self-concept development in adulthood. A new area of research focuses on how adults become aware of their own aging and how this awareness is linked to preparations for healthy and successful aging.  Dr. Diehl’s research lab is the Adult Development and Aging ProjecT (ADAPT) lab, which can be visited at http://www.adapt.cahs.colostate.edu/

Manfred.Diehl@ColoState.edu

Christine Fruhauf – Dr. Fruhauf’s research focuses on aging families including grandparenting and family caregiving. Her work includes grandparents rearing grandchildren, grandparent and adult grandchild relationships, GLBT grandparenting, young adult caregivers, and the impact of respite care on caregivers’ depressive symptoms. She also applies Community-Based Participatory Research methods to her work. Christine.Fruhauf@ColoState.edu

Interested students can contact any faculty member in our department for questions regarding our program, funding opportunities, and ongoing research projects.

Applications are due January 2, 2013.  Go to our departmental website for more information: http://www.hdfs.cahs.colostate.edu/

Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins, an hour’s drive north of Denver.  Situated on the front range of the Rocky Mountains, Fort Collins has excellent schools, outstanding recreational opportunities, and a sunny climate.  With a population of approximately 150,000, the city has been listed by several national publications as one of the best places to live in the United States.

INFO: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: Stress and Health Disparities Working Group

From: DiSandro, Patty [mailto:pedisandro@apa.org]

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Stress and Health Disparities

The American Psychological Association, as part of its strategic initiative on health disparities, is soliciting nominations for a Working Group on stress and health disparities. The Association is especially interested in researchers, practitioners, and educators who are knowledgeable about stress-related factors that influence the health and well-being of individuals from health disparity population groups, particularly racial/ethnic minority, low income, disability, and LGBT communities.  Stress associated with health conditions such as obesity, substance use, depression and anxiety disorders, trauma, and violence is of interest.

Goals of the working group include: (1) summarize major findings on the role of stress in health disparities including information on the biopsychosocial mechanisms through which stress affects different health outcomes and information on potential moderators of these effects including biological, interpersonal and environmental factors; (2)  identify evidence-based/effective interventions that address  stress,   (3) identify strategies to effectively disseminate information on evidence-based programs/best practices on stress assessment, prevention, and treatment to psychologists, other health professionals, students, and consumers,  and (4) recommend actions needed to implement effective stress awareness, prevention, and treatment  programs and policies.

Working group members are required to attend one in-person meeting in Washington, DC, with meeting-related expenses reimbursed by APA. Members will primarily communicate via conference calls and email to accomplish the working group’s tasks.   It is anticipated that two years of service will be required for this work to be completed.

Candidates for the working group should be well-versed in the literature on stress in underserved and vulnerable populations.   Candidates are asked to submit (1) a letter indicating their willingness to serve and detailing their particular expertise on the issue, and (2) a current CV, no later than November 7, 2012.  Individuals from under-represented and/diverse populations are especially encouraged to apply.  Materials should be sent to Patty DiSandro via email, pedisandro@apa.org.

INFO: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: Health Disparities in Boys & Men

From: DiSandro, Patty [mailto:pedisandro@apa.org]

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Health Disparities in Boys and Men

The American Psychological Association as part of its strategic initiative on health disparities is soliciting nominations for a Working Group on health disparities in boys and men.  Males from low socioeconomic backgrounds and racial/ethnic minority populations, in particular, experience poorer health, are more likely to engage in high risk behaviors, and are less likely to engage in behaviors that promote good health.  The Association is interested in researchers, practitioners and educators who are knowledgeable about the health and well-being of boys and men from underserved communities, especially factors related to stress,   substance use, trauma and violence, and interventions effective with males.  The major goals of the working group are to prepare a review of evidence-based interventions and policies effective in improving the health and well-being of boys and men from health priority populations (e.g., racial/ethnic minority, low SES) and to develop an action plan for the Association to increase psychology’s awareness of and involvement in efforts to improve the health and quality of life of vulnerable boys and men.

Working group members are required to attend one in-person meeting in Washington, DC, with meeting-related expenses reimbursed by APA. Members will primarily communicate via conference calls and email to accomplish the working group’s tasks.   It is anticipated that two years of service will be required for this work to be completed.

Candidates for the working group should be well-versed in the literature on boys and men from underserved populations.
