INFO: Call for chapters, "When Research Studies Go Off the Rails"

We are in the process of preparing an edited book entitled When Research Studies Go Off the Rails: Solutions and Prevention Strategies, to be published by Guilford Publications, Inc. The book will consist of a collection of real-life stories about unanticipated problems encountered in different stages of a study: modifications in the overall study design; obtaining ethics approval; recruitment and training of research personnel; recruitment, selection, and retention of participants; execution of the study protocol; data collection; and data analysis. The study could have used a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed approach to research, and have been conducted in clinical settings, the laboratory, or natural settings. Each paper will be about 10-15, double-spaced, pages in length, including figures, tables, and reference list, and discuss a brief overview of the original study purpose, design, and methods; a detailed description of the challenge encountered, clarifying its nature and contributing factors; strategies used to address or overcome the challenge, including modifications in the study design and methods; and lessons learned from this experience. The chapter deadline will be February of 2008.

INFO: APA Continuing Education Committee seeks nominations

APA Continuing Education Committee seeks nominations

The Continuing Education Committee (CEC) seeks nominations for five new members to begin three-year terms on January 1, 2008. The Committee on Aging believes that having a member of CEC with expertise in aging issues would be one good way to encourage additional geropsychology training opportunities for all psychologists. If anyone is interested in being nominated for CEC, let me know, and CONA could write a letter to support your nomination. The CEC Call for Nominations follows.

CEC Members are required to attend two committee meetings each year in the Washington, DC area with expenses reimbursed by APA. Members also work on committee projects between meetings.

As defined in APA's Association Rules, the committee develops policy and program recommendations for the association's continuing education (CE) program, working collaboratively with the Office of Continuing Education in Psychology and the Continuing Education Sponsor Approval System. The committee's tasks include:

Developing and delivering CE programs and products. Providing educational and technical assistance to APA directorates, divisions, state associations and other sponsors. Collaborating with organizations that want to become APA-approved sponsors. Providing review of all sponsors and organizations seeking APA sponsor approval. Identifying, promoting, implementing and evaluating research, development and innovations in CE.

The Committee seeks to assemble a professionally and multiculturally diverse group of psychologists. It encourages nominations from individuals committed to life-long learning, and is specifically looking for individuals with knowledge of or background in neuropsychology, clinical science, psychopharmacology, and psychologists in independent practice. Early career psychologists are also encouraged to submit nominations. CEC is committed to maintaining a diverse and broad representation from all groups and areas of psychology.

The deadline for submissions is August 31, 2007. Nominations consisting of the nominee's curriculum vitae and a letter stating the individual's interest in serving should be submitted to Karen Kanefield, Sponsor Approval System, by e-mail to kkanefield@apa.org or at the APA address.

2007 Summer Institute on Research Methodology, Oregon State University

July 9-10: Multilevel Modeling using Mplus July 11-12: Advanced Latent Growth Curve Modeling using Mplus

Website: http://oregonstate.edu/~hofers/OSU_SI/

About the Summer Institute

The Summer Institute on Research Methodology will be held July 9 to 12, 2007 on the Oregon State University campus, hosted by the College of Health and Human Sciences (HHS). Research methodology is central to the health and human sciences. The complexity of developmental, social, and health processes require rigorous attention to measurement, sampling, design, and statistical analysis.

Introductory and advanced courses will be offered by the Methodology Core over a period of four days (two days each) during the summer months. The 2007 introductory course provides instruction in the concepts and application of multilevel models, and their implementation using Mplus. Participants will be expected to be familiar with the General Linear Model. The advanced course will focus on the analysis of change using Mplus and will require some degree of prior experience in multilevel modeling, which may be obtained in the introductory course offering. These two courses can be taken independently or combined. The courses will be team taught and draw on the faculty expertise in the College of Health and Human Sciences, at Oregon State University. Applied examples will be used throughout the workshops, with hands-on analysis experience making use of several available data sets.

July 9-10: Introductory Course: Multilevel Modeling using Mplus (Alan Acock, Sam Vuchinich). Participants will learn how to use the Mplus software for the analysis of nested data structures, including family and longitudinal data.

July 11-12: Advanced Course: Latent Growth Curve Modeling using Mplus (Terry Duncan, Alan Acock, Scott Hofer). This workshop will review latent growth curve modeling using the Mplus software and feature the extension of these basic models for multivariate outcomes, time-varying predictors, growth models with ordered categorical outcomes, and analysis of growth mixtures (i.e., group differences in trajectories).

Registration

The registration fee for each of the basic and advanced courses is $250, or $450 for the combined courses ($150 and $300 for graduate students). These fees include all workshop materials, use of a laptop computer containing all relevant software and programs (each shared between two individuals), lunch and coffee breaks every day, and one dinner reception per two-day workshop. Please register using the online form available on the website.

Please see the 2007 Summer Institute website (http://oregonstate.edu/~hofers/OSU_SI/) for details regarding course material, faculty, registration, travel and accommodation, and contact information.

JOBS/STUDENTS: Age and Human Factors Post-doc, Psych, Florida State University

Age and Human Factors Post-doctoral Fellow position in the Psychology Department, Florida State University

The Psychology Department of Florida State University is inviting applications for a post-doctoral fellow position beginning September 1, 2007. The position is funded from a contract with Florida Department of Transportation that ends on December 31, 2008. There is high probability of extension of this position with other existing projects contingent on availability of funding.

Brief Project Description: The main objectives of the project entitled "Intersection and Pedestrian Safety Research" are to examine functionality of traffic signs and signals for motorists and pedestrians of varying ages in order to recommend guidelines for sign/symbol design. In light of these objectives, the project aims to conduct a series of field and laboratory-based studies that will investigate legibility, recognition and comprehension of various signs and symbols (for example, street names, warning signs, pedestrian signals, dynamic message signs, etc.) for young, middle-aged and older adults in different ambient light conditions. It is hoped that findings of these studies would generate guidelines for design of the signs, training of the elder drivers, and adoption of specific driving/pedestrian programs by Florida Department of Transportation.

Qualifications: PhD in Psychology (emphasis on aging) or Engineering with solid background in human factors/applied cognition/engineering psychology. Experience in design and conduct of field and laboratory study is highly desirable. The position requires having substantial knowledge and experience in data collection and analysis procedures, and report generation and presentation. The fellow should have experience in leading, managing, and organizing the project team and related activities. Knowledge of statistical analysis (e.g., SPSS) and experimental design tools (e.g., E-Prime) is preferred. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.

Other requirements: A valid driving license and vehicle to commute between the university, testing site(s), and Traffic Engineering Research Laboratory within the city of Tallahassee. Some studies are conducted after hours (evening and night time).

Responsibilities: The position requires the fellow to help design and conduct proposed field studies, co-ordinate between students, principal investigator and FDOT personnel. In cooperation with other research assistants, the fellow will take part in screening and recruiting participants for the studies, collecting and analyzing data using necessary computer software(s), writing and presenting study reports. The fellow will also be responsible for coordinating weekly project meetings and writing monthly progress reports for FDOT.

Apart from the project related responsibilities, there will be opportunities to pursue other research activities in human factors and applied cognition areas (e.g., the CREATE project). This position does not require any teaching responsibilities.

Remuneration/Benefits: The annual salary of this position is approximately US $50,000 with additional funding available for health insurance. However, no relocation cost is available.

Interested candidates should send current vitae and two reference letters to (electronic submission is encouraged):
