INFO call for papers - Health Psychology's special issue: The Role of Social Networks in Adult Health (deadlines - LOI: 1/1/13; submission: 3/31/13)

Life-span developmental research has demonstrated that social networks decrease in size with age, starting as early as midlife.  One explanation for this phenomenon is that people choose to focus on close family members and friends and exclude more peripheral, casual relationships.  However, little research in this area has addressed the health consequences of a shrinking social network.  Research in health psychology shows that close relationships are potential sources of conflict as well as satisfaction, and suggests that a broader network of support may be protective against losses experienced with aging.  In addition, having a more diverse social network is associated with better health during mid- and late-adulthood including greater immunity to infectious disease, better cardiovascular health, and lower risk for mortality. Research that bridges these areas of inquiry is much needed.

We are calling for original manuscripts examining the role of social networks (including breadth, satisfaction, conflict) in adults' physical health (also broadly defined).  With this call for papers, we hope to attract manuscripts that also examine potential pathways by which social network changes affect health, including health-related support exchanges, health behaviors, and physiological functioning.   We welcome manuscripts that examine age differences in associations between social network changes and health or in the mechanisms linking the two.  Papers addressing the effects of voluntary versus involuntary social network changes are also welcomed.

Guest editors for the special issue are Lynn Martire, PhD, Melissa Franks, PhD, and Cay Anderson-Hanley, PhD.  Authors should submit a short proposal (maximum of 400 words) that outlines the plan for a full manuscript to Lynn Martire (lmm51@psu.edu) by January 1, 2013. The proposal should outline the study question, methods and findings of the proposed submission and note how the paper will align with the theme of the special issue. Submissions are due March 31, 2013. Papers should be prepared in full accord with the Health Psychology Instructions to Authors and submitted through the Manuscript Submission Portal. All manuscripts will be peer reviewed. Some papers not included in a specific special section may be accepted for publication in Health Psychology as regular papers. Please indicate in the cover letter accompanying your manuscript that you would like to have the paper considered for the Special Series on The Role of Social Networks in Adult Health.

CONFERENCES: 2013 Dallas Aging and Cognition Conference January 27-28, 2013

The 2013 Dallas Aging and Cognition Conference (Dallas ACC), sponsored by the Center for Vital Longevity at the University of Texas at Dallas, will be held January 26-28, 2013 at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. The theme of this year's conference is "Predicting Successful and Unsuccessful Aging: Early Neural Markers of Decline and Disease."

The Human Development and Family Studies program at Kent State University is seeking applicants at the Assistant or Associate professor level for a 9-month tenure track position to begin August 2013 with the opportunity for summer teaching and research support. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in human development, family studies, or related field and evidence of an active research program capable of supporting extramural funding in the areas of positive youth development and/or prevention science. Appropriate areas of expertise might include, but are not limited to: child or adolescent mental health; substance use prevention/intervention; positive youth development; health disparities/vulnerable populations; and risk and resilience. JOBS: PostDoc on visual perception in healthy ageing

A postdoctoral position is available to work on a BBSRC funded project with Dr. Karin Pilz (http://homepages.abdn.ac.uk/k.s.pilz/pages), School of Psychology, Aberdeen University.

The project will investigate the neural mechanisms underlying changes in high- and low-level visual motion perception in healthy ageing using both psychophysical methods and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).  

The candidate will be part of an enthusiastic and interdisciplinary research team at the School of Psychology within the University of Aberdeen. The Vision Research Laboratories at the School of Psychology span a wide variety of expertise in fields like visual attention, object recognition, motion perception, and neuropsychology, just to name a few. The School of Psychology has excellent facilities with several psychophysical workstations, eye-tracking facilities and electroencephalograms (EEG). In addition, the University of Aberdeen has state of the art imaging facilities at the Aberdeen Biomedical Imaging Centre (ABIC) and a strong focus on ageing research spanning a variety of different fields and disciplines.

Aberdeen itself is Scotland's third largest city. It is situated between sandy beaches and sea cliffs on the East and the beautiful Scottish countryside on the West, which offers a variety of outdoor activities such as climbing, hiking and mountain biking.

Applicants should have (or be about to gain) a PhD in psychology, neuroscience or a related field, have a proven record of experimental research, as well as basic programming experience, preferably in Matlab. Experience with fMRI would be beneficial.

Seniors Housing & Care Journal is accepting submissions for its September 2013 issue. Submissions are due April 1, 2013.

Published by the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industry and the Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging, the Journal is an open-access, peer-reviewed academic journal that disseminates empirically based research regarding the seniors housing and care fields; addresses critical issues faced by senior care professionals; and is relevant to the day-to-day operation of senior communities.

The
Journal accepts research papers (original reports of completed research) and brief reports (pilot studies about innovative ideas for senior housing and care with implications for future research). Occasionally, a limited number of commentaries addressing emerging issues faced by the senior housing and care industry and brief reviews of new resources available to practitioners in the field may be accepted for publication.


SHCJ also offers annual awards with honoraria for up to two outstanding research papers each year. This year the award is sponsored by Prudential Real Estate Investors.

Candidates should be prepared to teach courses in developmental psychology as well as an area of specialization at the undergraduate and graduate levels and become involved in university and professional service activities.   The normal teaching load is four courses per academic year (two in each of Fall and Winter semesters).  The Department of Psychology has a rapidly expanding Masters and PhD program with its inaugural class beginning in Fall, 2012. Preference will be given to those candidates who are prepared to mentor undergraduate students and graduate students at the Masters and PhD levels.
