INVITATION FOR APPLICATIONS AND NOMINATIONS FOR THE POSITION
OF CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY RELATIONS AND APPLIED NUTRITION

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Chair in the
Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition. The position carries
with it a full‐time tenured academic appointment (rank open). The
appointment as Chair will be for five years, renewable for a second term of
up to five years. The preferred start date is July 1, 2012. Salary will be
related to qualifications and experience.

Candidates must have an established record of scholarship in an area
relevant to the Department's mission. The successful candidate will
typically have a 70% service, 20% research and 10% teaching distribution of
effort and as a result will be expected to conduct research and teach
and/or advise graduate students.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and an
ability to balance strong leadership qualities with demonstrated
management capabilities. Candidates should also demonstrate a good
understanding of the challenges associated with leading an interdisciplinary
department, appreciate the interests of multiple stakeholders and exhibit
skills as a consensus builder.

In collaboration with departmental colleagues, the Chair will be expected to
provide leadership by guiding the future direction and positioning of the
Department. The Chair will be expected to maintain and communicate a
sense of direction; to act as a responsible advocate for the Department; to
encourage respect for a range of career paths, and different forms and
fields of scholarship; to foster values of fairness, excellence and
collaboration; and to maintain a sense of pride, achievement and
community among all members (students, staff and faculty) of the
Department.

In terms of management capabilities, the Chair will be expected to work
within the practices and policies of the university including various
collective agreements and accreditation standards; be responsible for
following and shaping departmental policy to ensure orderly, effective,
efficient and collegial operation of the department; provide mentorship
and direction to individual members of the department; and work
effectively as a member of the CSAHS Dean's Council to ensure that the
department interests are well represented in college level initiatives.
The Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition is an
interdisciplinary academic unit focused on the enhancement of the quality
of all forms of human development in diverse communities. The emphasis
on both theoretical and basic/applied research impacts professional
practice, social and health policy, and the design of interventions and
preventive strategies. Throughout training in the BASc, MSc and PhD
programs, the faculty focus on preparation of leaders in these
interdisciplinary fields. For more information on the department, please
