Two-Year Post-Doc Research Scholar in Stress, Social Support, and Healthy Aging
The Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) program at Kent State University (KSU) seeks applications for a full-time post-doctoral research fellowship to begin in 2013. Interested applicants will work closely with Drs. Greg Smith and Kelly Cichy on their research programs related to stress, social support, and healthy aging.
Dr. Smith's research focuses primarily on both preventive and remedial interventions (from a dyadic perspective) to offset stressors associated with being either a caregiver or care receiver within aging families. Currently Dr. Smith is the PI of a multi-site Randomized Clinical Trial funded by NIH (1R01NR012256 - 02) comparing the effectiveness of two evidenced-based interventions (Behavioral Parenting Training and Cognitive Behavior Coping Skills Training) to each other and to a standard of care support group program with respect to improving the well-being of custodial grandmothers and the grandchildren. His interests also include blending psycho educational support for caregivers with chronic
illness self-management programming for care receivers.
Dr. Cichy's research examines the links between social relationships and health, including a focus on family relationships in later life as well as the health implications of stressful experiences involving family (e.g., conflict, social support demands), particularly within African American families. Dr. Cichy has received funding from the National Institute of Aging (NIA) and is currently in the process of preparing a grant proposal to examine the implications of stressful family experiences for older African Americans adults' health behaviors (e.g., physical activity, emotional eating) in an effort to explore potential mechanism explaining racial disparities in health and well-being.
Applicants must have received a Ph.D. in human development, family studies, psychology, sociology, or a related field within the last 3 years and have a strong interest in stress, social support, and/or aging research.
The position involves collaborating with Drs. Smith and Cichy on their existing research projects, and on developing new grant applications in the areas of stress, social support, and healthy aging.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to also advance his or her own scholarship and grant writing opportunities.
Other attractive features of this position include: 1) joining an inter-disciplinary community of post-doctoral scholars at KSU, 2) participating in a structured professional development program for post docs, 3) interacting with funded researchers both within and outside of KSU; and 4) having abundant office space in the Human Development Center (G. Smith, Director) on the KSU campus.
This position will be funded for 1-2 years with a competitive postdoctoral salary and healthcare benefits.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vita, research statement, unofficial transcripts, and three letters of recommendation by email to: Gregory C. Smith
(gsmith2@kent.edu) or Kelly Cichy (kcichy@kent.edu). Kent State is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Good luck with your search for a position in higher education.
