Division 12, section 2 (Clinical geropsychology) is seeking nominations for the Distinguished Clinical Mentorship award. The purpose of this award is to recognize clinical geropsychologists who have played important roles in the clinical supervision of psychology graduate students, interns, and/or post doctoral fellows who provide services to older adults. It also recognizes individuals who have played mentoring roles. Nominations can be made by members and student members of section 2. Nominations should be accompanied by letters from at least three current or former supervisees. Please submit all letters to the Committee Chair by April 30th.
Geropsychology Student award competitors are also sought. Please send an original paper to the Committee Chair for consideration by April 30th. $250 will be awarded to the winner.

In response to our joint proposal, we received a $1500 Interdivisional Grant in January to accomplish the following objectives: 1. Development of a handbook on how Divisions can effectively operationalize the APA Task Force on Diversity’s Resolutions on Enhancing Diversity in APA 2. The handbook will include specific conflict resolution models The turn around time is pretty short, so we should get to work on this. I have pasted in the time line below. (1) Funds must be used within 12 months of the award. The funding 12 month period runs from January 2006 to December 2006. (2) A written report on the progress of your project must be submitted to the APA Division Services Office by April 28, 2006. We will submit a project update to the Board of Directors at its June 2006 meeting. (3) A final report on the project is required by September 4, 2006. Please notice the change in dates. A final report is needed before the CODAPAR Fall Consolidated Meeting September 29 October 1, so that the Committee can make its final report. If your project/event takes place after September, please submit your report soon after its completion. Please let me know times and days of the week that are usually good for you to participate on a conference call and I will set up our initial meeting. I'm thinking that our first meeting agenda will bet to: 1. Choose up to two representatives from each division to participate in meetings 2. Outline at least brief objectives 3. Develop a time line for the objectives 4. Make decisions about who wants to participate in which pieces. I was thinking we should meet every couple of weeks for 45 minutes to an hour to keep us on track. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will host a web chat to answer questions about the March 14 Federal Register notice on changes to the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs (NREPP).
SAMHSA expects the new NREPP to serve as a "decision support system" to help state and community-based organizations select programs and practices that meet their needs. The new protocols and procedures outlined in the notice will help reduce the significant lag-time between the generation of new scientific knowledge and its application by community-based prevention and treatment programs and providers.

Award for Distinguished Service to Psychological Science. The APA Board of Scientific Affairs (BSA) is soliciting nominations for the Award for Distinguished Service to Psychological Science. This Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to psychological science through their commitment to a culture of service. Award recipients will receive an honorarium of $1,000. The deadline for nominations is May 15, 2006.
Nominees will have demonstrated their service to the discipline by aiding in association governance; serving on boards, committees and various psychological associations; editing journals; reviewing grant proposals; mentoring students and colleagues; advocating for psychological science's best interests with state and federal lawmakers; and promoting the value of psychological science in the public eye. Departmental Award for Culture of Service in the Psychological Sciences. Description: The BIDMC, a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, is soliciting applicants for it's pre-doctoral short-term research training experience: the NIA-funded Translational Research in Aging Training Program. This program provides several funded short-term (8-12 weeks) research opportunities (clinical and basic science) for pre-doctoral candidates (M.D./Ph.D.). This announcement seeks applicants interested in participating in a short training program in Applied General Latent Variable Methods in Aging Research. The goal of the program is to provide pre-doctoral trainees with experience using and interpreting results from latent variable analysis models. The software used will be Mplus. Methods of emphasis may include one of factor analysis, item response theory, path analysis, latent growth modeling, discrete time survival analysis, latent class and profile mixture models. Trainees will pursue a independent research topic within the field of aging research broadly and that is suitably addressed using a general latent variable modeling approach. Training and supervision will be provided by Rich Jones, Sc.D. and Frances Yang, Ph.D.
Objectives: To provide participants with exposure and training using Mplus to use general latent variable methods to address substantively meaningful and important questions in aging research. It is expected that the participant will complete a research project (statistical analysis with latent variable(s)) and prepare a draft of a manuscript over this 8-12 week period. Applicants must commit to attending a training program of 8-12 consecutive weeks between June 5, 2006 and September 1, 2006 in Boston, MA.
Prerequisites: Graduate level training in multivariable statistical methods (e.g., multiple regression, ANOVA, multiple logistic regression). Training and/or experience with multivariate methods (factor analysis, path analysis, item response theory, latent class analysis) would be very helpful, but not required. The participant must be proficient with a general purpose statistical software package (e.g., SAS, SPSS, STATA, R, S; STATA will be most beneficial to the participant). A notebook computer with Mplus software is strongly recommended.
Support: Includes a stipend set at the NIH funding level for Pre-docs ($5,193 for a 12-week program). Individuals will be supplied with a work space and with a computer workstation (if needed) at the Institute for Aging Research at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Boston, MA. Drs. Jones and Yang will be available informally for consultation and training throughout the program, and each week one workshop day will be held to demonstrate methods and discuss methodological and inferential issues. If the applicant does not have a Mplus license, the demo version of the software will be used (available from www.statmodel.com). Travel and living expenses must be paid by the applicant.
Friday Harbor Psychometrics Workshop: Applicants may also wish to consider attending the annual "Friday Harbor Psychometrics in Aging Research" workshop held at the University of Washington Friday Harbor Research Labs on San Juan Island, Washington. The 2006 workshop will occur August 28-September 1 2006. Rich Jones' lab will cover tuition and boarding costs for summer program attendees that also attend the FH Psychometrics workshop. Travel to the FH Psychometrics workshop must be covered by the applicant.

If you are an avid reader of psychology books, I would like to ask you to consider being a regular book reviewer for PsycCRITIQUES (the online incarnation of Contemporary Psychology). I am the Editor for PsycCRITIQUES, and I'm working with APA staff to identify psychologists to review current copyright year books.

Former Division 20 President Jack Botwinick died in St. Louis, MO February 12, 2006 after a brief illness. As a returning veteran of World War II, he received his BA and MA from Brooklyn College and his PhD from New York University in 1953. He was a research scientist in the laboratory on aging at the National Institute of Mental Health and a faculty member in the Gerontology Center at Duke University before joining the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis in 1968 as Professor of Psychology and Neurology and Director of the Aging and Development Program in the Department of Psychology where he remained until his retirement in 1988.

The mission of the National Multicultural Conference and Summit (NMCS) is to convene students, practitioners, and scholars in psychology and related fields to discuss human diversity and multiculturalism. The Summer Research Institute in Geriatric Psychiatry (SRI) is an annual week-long training program designed for junior faculty members, post-residency (M.D. or D.O.) and post-doctoral (Ph.D., Psy. D., Pharm.D.) fellows interested in research careers in geriatric mental health. The orientation of the SRI is broad and covers career development strategies for those committed to careers in basic and translational research, clinical and treatment research, and health services research. Participants will have in common a shared commitment to advancing knowledge in the mental disorders of late life. They will bring a variety of skills and backgrounds to the SRI and will have the opportunity to present their ideas to the faculty and fellow participants.
The application process for the 2006 Summer Research Institute in Geriatric Psychiatry is currently open. This year's SRI will be in Pittsburgh from July 22-28. An application consists of:

In an effort spearheaded by Jane Berry and Liz Stine-Morrow, the Division 20 Executive Committee has revised the Division By-Laws to bring them up to date with current practice and to maximize the efficiency of accomplishing Division business. They have been reviewed by APA's legal council for appropriateness, and will be available on the Division 20 for member review and comment [http://apadiv20.phhp.ufl.edu/bylaw_revise.htm] between February 6, 2006 and May 6, 2006. A formal vote on accepting the By-Laws as revised will take place at the Division's Annual Business Meeting at the APA Convention in August, 2006.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is recruiting for two Intramural Research Postdoctoral Training Award Postdoctoral positions in the Laboratory of Personality and Cognition (LPC) (Chief, Dr. Paul T. Costa).
Position 1: The candidate will work in close collaboration with Senior Investigators and scientists in the Personality, Stress and Coping Section of LPC. Major duties involve analysis of data from existing datasets on the association of personality traits to test hypotheses and write papers on personality and its links to a wide array of outcomes including subjective and objective indices of well-being, Axis I and Axis II disorders and other health outcomes with attention to the role of life events, social network, and psychobiological variables. Research expertise in the analysis of psychosocial and health-related variables associated with personality traits is desirable.
Position 2: The ideal candidate will have a very strong quantitative background and be highly proficient in use of specialized statistical programs to work on several ongoing projects that involve the analysis of behavioral genetic data. A major focus will involve examination of genetic influences on personality in old age and the joint influences of genetics and personality in health in old age in the NAS-NRC WWII Twins Registry.
Additional duties involve working in support of LPC scientists on a collaborative study in Sardinia which involves the analysis of full human genome data to identify QTLs underlying the major domains and facets of personality. PhD in behavior genetics is highly desirable as is expertise in statistical genetics.
Interested candidates must have a Ph.D. or M.D. with less than five years of postdoctoral research experience as indicated in the position duties outlined above. Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Starting salary range is $38,500 to $42,600 for individuals with 1 year or less of relevant experience; starting salary range is $43,100 to $54,100 for individuals with 4 to 5 years of relevant experience. Annual performance based increases of $1,000 to $2000 may be granted.
