We are in the process of preparing an edited book entitled When
Research Studies Go Off the Rails: Solutions and Prevention
Strategies, to be published by Guilford Publications, Inc. The book
will consist of a collection of real-life stories about unanticipated
problems encountered in different stages of a study: modifications in
the overall study design; obtaining ethics approval; recruitment and
training of research personnel; recruitment, selection, and retention
of participants; execution of the study protocol; data collection;
and data analysis. The study could have used a quantitative,
qualitative, or mixed approach to research, and have been conducted
in clinical settings, the laboratory, or natural settings. Each paper
will be about 10-15, double-spaced, pages in length, including
figures, tables, and reference list, and discuss a brief overview of
the original study purpose, design, and methods; a detailed
description of the challenge encountered, clarifying its nature and
contributing factors; strategies used to address or overcome the
challenge, including modifications in the study design and methods;
and lessons learned from this experience. The chapter deadline will
be February of 2008.
