INFO: Free webinar on Military Service in the Life Course

<ATT00001.png>

FREE Webinar: Friday September 21, 2012 from 1-2 pm (EST)

Military Service in the Life Course:

Implications for Later-Life Health and Well-Being

This webinar highlights the pressing need for a lifespan approach to the effects of military service that considers positive and negative effects. The first two speakers will focus on Vietnam veterans. Anica Pless Kaiser will examine how captivity stressors, mental health, and individuals' background characteristics were related to mental health 30 years after repatriation. Jeanne Mager Stellman will examine current health among women veterans in relation to warzone stress, and consider whether posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms mediated the effects of warzone stress on mental and physical health. In contrast, Jennifer Moye will examine a diverse group of veterans, drawing on theories of posttraumatic growth to explore whether the combunation of combat exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder in early life affect coping with cancer in later life. Finally, Richard A. Settersten, Jr. will examine how World War II veterans appraised specific dimensions of military service after the war and over 40 years later, as well as later-life reflections on the role of military service in their life course. In sum, these talks will illustrate how the impact of potentially traumatic experiences in early life can reverberate throughout life, particularly their long-term effects (positive as well as negative) on physical and mental health. With the growing number of veterans in societies today, these talks will reveal that some, but not all, may well carry their burdens of military service long after they have laid down their weapons.

Guests:

  • Avron Spiro III, VA Boston Healthcare System
  • Anica Pless Kaiser, VA Boston Healthcare System
  • Jeanne Mager Stellman, Columbia University
  • Jennifer Moye, VA Boston Healthcare System
  • Richard A. Settersten, Jr., Oregon State University

INFO: Electioneering

From: Rummel, Chad [mailto:crummel@apa.org]

From: APA Division Officers list [mailto:DIVOFFICERS@LISTS.APA.ORG] On Behalf Of Raben, Jesse
Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2012 3:54 PM
To: DIVOFFICERS@LISTS.APA.ORG
Subject: [DIVOFFICERS] Reminder: Electioneering
Importance: High

With the presidential election only a few months away, now is a good time to remind the Divisions of critical limitations on division political activities.

As a 501(c) (3) organization, APA and its Divisions are absolutely prohibited from endorsing or opposing or engaging in activity that could be construed as endorsing or opposing political candidates for local, state or federal office. If any APA or Division resources, including lists, are used for that purpose APA (and its divisions) could lose its tax exempt status which would be a catastrophic result for APA, its divisions and members. This is an absolute prohibition for 501 (c) (3)'s and there is no wiggle room. Notably, the IRS is very attuned to 501(c) (3) organizations that are engaging in political activity and has issued challenges to the tax exempt status for a number of charitable organizations.

Under the law, Divisions and their officers, as part of a charitable organization that enjoys the benefits of 501(c) (3) status, are prohibited from engaging in any action that could be construed as endorsement of or opposition to a candidate for public office by the Division. By way of example, fundraisers, Division donations of any resources, favorable or negative public statements about a candidate by a Division in its newsletters, correspondence on its website or list or any other use of Division assets (including lists) to promote or oppose candidates, are all activities that would place the division, its officers and APA at significant risk of adverse IRS enforcement action.

To assure that your Division is protected from any risk on this front, please distribute this reminder to your members, especially those who serve on Division’s executive committee and those involved in creating Division publications and managing Division listservs.

Notably the time running up to an election is much more sensitive than other times. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Division Services or APA’s Office of General Counsel.

Regards,

Jesse Raben

INFO: Fellow Status in Division 20

Becoming a Fellow in Division 20

Division 20 welcomes self- and other nominations for Fellow status in APA and the Division. There are two processes: (1) if you are currently not a Fellow in any APA Division, you would be applying for initial Fellow status; or (2) if you are already a Fellow in another APA Division, and you are a member of Division 20, you can request consideration for Fellow status as well in Division 20. The process for each is described briefly below.

Individuals interested in nominating colleagues for Fellow status can consult a list of those who currently hold Fellow status in Division 20 by visiting the Division 20 website (http://apadiv20.phhp.ufl.edu/) and clicking the “List of Div. 20 Fellows” option under the “Directories/Contact” tab.

The APA requirements for Division 20 members to be nominated to Initial Fellow status are available on the APA website (http://www.apa.org/membership/fellows/index.aspx). You can also read the Division 20 criteria at (http://www.apa.org/membership/fellows/division-20.pdf). Nominees and potential nominees should be aware of the importance of the nominee’s self-statement which makes clear exactly how the nominee has made “unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology” (an APA requirement as stated on the website). Also, although not mandatory, evidence of involvement in APA in general and Division 20 in particular is very helpful and greatly strengthens the application. Recommenders must fill out two forms: one is called a “Worksheet” and contains a rating scale; the second form (the “Fellow Status Evaluation Form”)  includes the actual letter of recommendation. Nominees are expected to send both of these forms to their recommenders (unless someone else is handling the entire nomination process). All of the materials for Initial Fellow applications must be submitted to John Cavanaugh no later than December 1, 2012.

The application process for individuals who are already Fellows of an APA Division is far simpler, requiring only a current CV and brief cover letter sent directly to John Cavanaugh. The deadline for submitting materials for Current Fellows is April 1, 2013.

Please contact John Cavanaugh (jcavanaugh@passhe.edu) if you have any questions.

Call for Nominations to the Committee on Women in Psychology: 2013

http://www.apa.org/pi/women/committee/call-for-nominations.aspx

The American Psychological Association's Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) is seeking nominations for two new members to begin terms in January 2013. The committee functions as a catalyst by interacting with and making recommendations to the various parts of the APA governing structure and the APA membership, as well as other relevant groups.

The committee's current strategic goals include promoting the health and well-being of all women, nationally and internationally; identifying and eliminating discriminatory and exploitive practices against all women, nationally and internationally; promoting the unique contributions of women to psychology; enhancing women's leadership within and outside of APA; monitoring activities of groups within the APA to assess the impact on women; collaborating with others as needed to achieve the empowerment of underrepresented groups; and advocating for public policy that enhances the lives of women, nationally and internationally. As part of its monitoring function, CWP devotes a full day during each of their two committee meetings each year to discussion of cross-cutting items submitted by other groups.

The committee is interested in persons with demonstrated interest and experience in women's issues to serve a 3-year term from January 2013 through December 2015. To fulfill the committee's commitment to full diversity in representation, one slate should be filled by an openly identified sexual minority psychologist and one slate should be filled by an ethnic minority psychologist. The committee seeks psychologists with expertise in practice and consulting and survey design, implementation, and analysis. Letters of nomination should clearly describe the candidate's specific qualifications relative to these criteria. Women at all career stages are invited to apply. Nominees to CWP must be full members of APA.

CWP members are required to attend two committee meetings each year in Washington, DC (Thursday night to Sunday afternoon) with expenses reimbursed by the APA. Candidates should ensure they can attend all committee meetings. Meetings in 2013 will be March 15-17 and September 20-22; meetings in 2014 and 2015 are tbd. Committee members also work on CWP priorities between meetings and will be expected to participate in regular committee conference calls. Because CWP sponsors a number of important events at the APA convention (e.g., the annual CWP Network meeting, presentation of the CWP Leadership Awards), CWP members are strongly encouraged to attend committee-sponsored APA convention events if possible, though expenses cannot be reimbursed.

Nomination materials should include a letter from the nominee indicating willingness to serve on CWP, a brief statement of the nominee's qualifications, and a current curriculum vita. Self-nominations are encouraged. APA nominations are open to members who are retired, are employed less than full time, or work full time. Nominations and supporting materials should be sent by September 1, 2012, to Kari Hill, APA Women's Programs Office, 750 First Street, N.E., Washington, DC, 20002-4242 or via e-mail at khill@apa.org<mailto:khill@apa.org>.

Re: INFO: DIV. 20 DUES REDUCED!!

There is an error in the business meeting minutes that were just distributed. Lynn Martire has stepped down from the Membership Committee. Ann Pearman, one of our two members at large, has gracously agreed to serve as co-chair in her place. Thanks to both Lynn and Ann for taking this on, and apologies to all for the confusion.

Best,
Pat

Subject: INFO: DIV. 20 DUES REDUCED!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that Division 20's Executive Committee voted to recommend reducing dues to $20/year (from the current $44), and just $12/year for students, which was passed by the membership at the business meeting (see attached). We accomplished this by eliminating Psychology and Aging as a member benefit, but those who want hard copies can still use their APA journal credit to subscribe to this outstanding journal. This was a difficult decision, and one that we've debated for some time, but keeping membership up is essential to making certain that your interests are adequately represented at APA.

So – pass the word! Join Division 20! Our new slogan is: $20 for 20! :)

I've enjoyed serving the Division during this past year. Thanks to members of the EC for all of their hard work! The new president, Pat Parmelee, will do a great job keeping your interests at the forefront of APA.

Cheers!
Carolyn
