STUDENTS: Dissertation Funding Opportunity
The National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) announces the new Beth Meyer-Arnold Dissertation Fellowship, which is designed to encourage original, doctoral-level scholarship in the area of adult day services. The award supports PhD Candidates in completing dissertation work in areas of interest to adult day services providers and consumers. Successful award applicants will have approved dissertation proposals that examine issues that impact the quality of life of participants and their family caregivers. In addition, applicants are encouraged to address one or more of the Institute of Medicine's six domains of health care quality as they can be related to adult day services (i.e., through providing safe, effective, person-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care). At this time, priority will be given to those applicants who examine issues of effectiveness and efficiency as they relate to adult day services.
Successful applicants will receive mentoring and support from members of the NADSA Research Committee and will be expected to present their research at the annual NADSA conference. Additionally, fellows and their advisors will be featured on the NADSA website. Up to three awards of $5000 each will be provided on an annual basis. Successful recipients will receive $4000 upon selection and $1000 after NADSA receives a pdf version of the dissertation.
Application materials:
1) Cover letter summarizing your interest in the award and how the objectives of the fellowship match your proposed study.
2) Summary of your dissertation proposal that should not exceed 12 pages. Please include the study purpose, literature review, significance, design and methods and a proposed timeline.
3) Curriculum Vitae.
4) Two letters of recommendation. One letter of recommendation must be from your dissertation advisor in which he/she should confirm that your dissertation proposal has been approved.
Please send your application materials electronically to nadsanews@gmail.com by August 20, 2012. Winners will be informed by email by September 7, 2012 and introduced at the NADSA conference in Pittsburgh, PA, September 20-22, 2012.
We value the strength of diversity and inclusion and encourage qualified individuals with disabilities and individuals of all backgrounds and cultures to apply. For additional information, please contact Dr. Holly I. Dabelko-Schoeny at dabelko-schoeny.1@osu.edu.

INFO: Helping Sara Qualls
From: Carolyn Aldwin [Carolyn.Aldwin@oregonstate.edu]:
Dear all:
Our friend and colleague, Sara Qualls, has been extraordinarily generous in her volunteering for Division 20 committees and projects. Unfortunately, her house burned down in the Colorado fires on the same day as her mother’s funeral. The UCCS faculty are arranging for Sara to purchase furniture and/or artwork at a local gallery to help replace some of her losses, and would welcome contributions from her friends and colleagues. Checks should be sent to:
Edie Greene
Chair, Dept. of Psychology
University of Colorado, Colorado Springs
1420 Austin Bluffs Parkway
Colorado Springs, CO 80918
Edie asks that the checks be sent to her before 7/31, and that individuals identify themselves so that Sara can thank them.
Alternatively, people can donate to the Alzheimer’s Association in her mother’s name, Berniece Honn, at http://www.alz.org/.

INFO: Institute of Medicine Report On Geriatric Mental Health and Substance Use Workforce
Today, The IOM has released its report, The Mental Health and Substance Use Workforce for Older Adults: In Whose Hands? On my initial read, psychology and geropsychology are mentioned throughout the report. Yea! They included a good amount of the tons of information and data that APA provided over the past year. One of the resources we provided , Psychology’s Role in Addressing the Mental and Behavioral Health Needs of the Geriatric Population, is online. The research of psychologists is also cited throughout the document. See the APA press release below with additional information.
I would be interested in folks’ opinions of the report after you read it.
And, THANK you to the individuals that provided information when I asked!

AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION APPLAUDS IOM REPORT ON MENTAL HEALTH WORKFORCE NEEDS FOR AGING POPULATION
WASHINGTON – A report released today by the Institute of Medicine offers a systematic analysis of the current and future mental and behavioral health care needs of America’s aging population, according to the American Psychological Association.
The report is entitled The Mental Health and Substance Use Workforce for Older Adults: In Whose Hands?
“This IOM report provides a foundation for our nation to build a psychology and mental health workforce to meet the needs of our rapidly growing and increasingly diverse aging population,” said APA CEO Norman B. Anderson, PhD. “The report reflects successful advocacy by the mental and behavioral health community and includes key policy recommendations, which the APA looks forward to promoting in partnership with federal, professional, and community leaders.”
The IOM appointed three APA member psychologists to serve on the study committee: Margarita AlegrÃa, PhD, professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and director of the Center for Multicultural Mental Health Research at Cambridge Health Alliance; Frederic C. Blow, PhD, professor of psychiatry and psychology and director of the Mental Health Services Outcomes and Translation Section in the Psychiatry Department of the University of Michigan Medical School; and Michael Alan Hoge, PhD, professor and director of clinical training in psychology, Department of Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine and director of Yale Behavioral Health. APA supported the work of the study by providing background documents related to psychology’s role in addressing the mental and behavioral health needs of the geriatric population. These materials included geropsychology workforce data, interdisciplinary models of geriatric mental and behavioral health care, and pre- and postdoctoral geropsychology training resources.
This study is a follow-up to a 2008 IOM report entitled Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce, which projected health care needs for the growing and increasingly diverse aging population. Funding for the new study was secured following a year-long advocacy campaign led by APA and partners from the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP), the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and the American Psychiatric Association. Congressional champions Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), then-Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), and Sen. Herb Kohl (D-W.I.) designated $900,000 to fund this important study.
APA, in partnership with the AAGP and NASW, plans to host a briefing Sept. 19 on Capitol Hill for members of Congress to highlight key findings and recommendations related to the mental and behavioral health care needs of older Americans.
The American Psychological Association, in Washington, D.C., is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States and is the world's largest association of psychologists. APA's membership includes more than 137,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial associations, APA works to advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people’s lives.

Peabody Orlando Hotel
Celebration Room 3
The USA and many other nations are seeing remarkable changes in the composition of their populations with dynamic implications across issues of gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, disability status, and urbanization. All of these changes also affect how individuals age in our society. Please join us to explore the implications of the Changing Faces of Aging for provision of health care and for work life. Help CONA identify new directions for its theme of multi-cultural competency.
The CONA award for the Advancement of Psychology and Aging will also be presented to
Peter Lichtenberg, PhD, ABPP
(the award presentation will take place at the outset of the hour, if you have other commitments for this hour, feel free to join us for part of it)
