POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW ( aka RESEARCH ASSOCIATE)

Mary Luszcz is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to work within the School of Psychology and the Flinders Centre for Ageing Studies (FCAS) at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia. The position is available now, for a duration of 3 years, on a .8 basis, with an option for full-time. International applicants are eligible and encouraged to apply.

The position requires responsibility for conducting research on an Australian Research Council-Linkage Project (ARC –LP) grant Day-to-day life of adults after age 85: the interplay of mood, engagement, cognition and health in the context of prior functioning and related projects.

This project is an innovative adjunct to the Australian Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ALSA), nicknamed ADuLTS (ALSA Daily Life Time-Sampling Study). International Co-Investigators Christiane Hoppmann (University of British Columbia, Canada) and Denis Gerstorf (The Pennsylvania State University, United States), and Ruth Walker of Flinders University, comprise the research team, and have a history of collaboration and publication. The project uses a one-week daily measurement-burst design to identify how everyday-life environments, engagement (in activities or with others), cognitive functioning, and mood are interconnected; how they may be linked to previous long-term aspects of ageing; and how they reflect current psychological and physiological wellbeing. Behavioural measures are accompanied by concurrent measures of arousal (saliva samples to gauge cortisol levels), in order to identify links between arousal and other aspects of development. In addition, the project is ‘linked’ to the wider ageing sector through partners from the aged-care industry and SA government. This provides considerable scope for addressing more applied questions stemming from the perspective of those providing services for and directly working with older adults.

The successful candidate will work closely together with the Project Team on theorizing and analysing the extensive data base and preparing refereed publications in premier international outlets. He or She will also be encouraged, and will be mentored, to develop and submit research proposals to funding agencies as a way to develop his or her own research agenda.

In summary, essential criteria on which selection will be based include:

1. Completed PhD in psychology, behavioural science or allied field, including, e.g., applied statistics or psychoneuroendocrinology.

2. Strong background and/or currently research active in an area of psychological, physiological, cognitive, motivational or social aspects ageing.

3. High level quantitative data analysis skills, particularly of short- and/or long-term longitudinal data

4. Demonstrated experience working with a variety of statistical computer software packages (e.g., HLM, SAS, SPSS, MPlus, or AMOS).

5. Refereed publication/s and/or refereed published full conference papers.

6. Capacity to develop a coherent research agenda, leading to further grant applications

ORGANISATIONAL ENVIRONMENT
