Although postdoctoral trainees would work primarily with one or two core faculty members, opportunities exist for interaction with other members of the faculty conducting aging research at Brandeis and in the Greater Boston area.

The primary faculty are:

Arthur Wingfield- Director (Ph.D., Oxford University): effects of age-related changes in hearing and cognitive function in older adulthood, and their impact on language comprehension and memory;

Margie Lachman- Co-director (Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University): personality and the self in midlife and later life in relation to cognitive functioning and physical health; the role of strategy use, anxiety, and stress as mediators;

Angela Gutchess (Ph.D., University of Michigan): influence of age and culture on memory and social cognition;

Derek Isaacowitz (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania): emotion in adulthood and old age and the interplay of cognitive processes, particularly attention, and emotion throughout the adult life-span;

Robert Sekuler (Ph.D., Brown University): vision, visual attention, and visual memory in adulthood and old age;

Patricia Tun (Ph.D., Georgia Institute of Technology): cognitive changes in midlife and late adulthood; effects of age and hearing ability on comprehension and memory for spoken language;

FUNDING: Division 20--Your Ideas about NIH Peer Review Needed

Dear colleague: NIH released an important Request For Information earlier this month, asking for ideas about how to change current peer review and grant submission systems to better accommodate the increased number of grant applications and to ensure that the peer review system keeps pace with the science that it serves. Two newly-formed advisory groups will review the feedback and report to the NIH Director's Advisory Committee.

Please take a moment now to reflect on your own experience with the NIH system and provide some comments or react to suggestions that have been made. Many new ideas are floating around NIH now. For example, some feel peer review should be done via teleconference or online software instead of face-to-face meetings, to allow more flexibility and make serving on panels less burdensome. Some feel that to get the best reviewers, NIH should compensate them in some way (e.g. by providing an extra year of support for their research grants). Some have suggested that the grant application form be shortened. Others have said that shortened forms may adversely impact new investigators who have less data to present and have to lay out more theoretical information to demonstrate the quality of their ideas. Perhaps you feel that the current system is fair and working well overall -- then you should certainly say so.

On the website, http://enhancing-peer-review.nih.gov/

there are instructions for providing comments on these issues. We encourage you to submit comments directly to NIH, but in addition, to share your comments with us at APA so your views can inform the comments that APA will submit.

This issue is so very important to the support of psychological research-- it deserves a few minutes of your time. Please encourage your colleagues to respond as well. We at APA expect to submit comments on Monday, August 13, so we encourage you to share your comments (to pkobor@apa.org) by the close of business on Friday, August 10. The NIH deadline for response is 5 pm on August 17, 2007. (Note that the APA convention begins on August 16!)

On behalf of my colleagues in the Science Government Relations Office and Science Directorate, we look forward to reading your thoughts and ideas on the NIH peer review system.

STUDENTS/INFO: Div. 12/2 training directory program update

Hello,

I am writing on behalf of APA Division 12, Section II, the Division of Clinical Geropsychology. A few years ago Gregory A. Hinrichsen, Ph.D. and Norm O'Rourke, Ph.D put together directories of Clinical Internships and Postdoctoral Fellowships training which indicated by program self-report those programs with specialty training in geropsychology and/or available clinical placements with "older adults." This previously created third edition of the Directory of Psychology Internships with Geropsychology Training Opportunities and the Directory of Clinical Geropsychology Postdoctoral Fellowships are now available for download on the 12/2 website. We are now in the process of updating the directories and would appreciate your feedback/participation. If you would like your training site listed in the updated version of the directory or would like to update your existing entry on the site, please visit our website to download the official form. Programs can email their completed listing forms to Steven David, Ph.D. at sdavid@mednet.ucla.edu

To download the Internship Directory and/or the Internship Update Form go to: http://geropsych.org/students.t1.html To download the Post-doc Directory and/or the Post-doc Update Form go to: http://geropsych.org/students.t2.html

The directories for download will now be updated approximately monthly (or as needed, depending on volume of updates coming in).

***Again, programs are invited to update their listings by emailing completed update forms to Steven David, Ph.D. at: sdavid@mednet.ucla.edu

Thank you for your time!

FUNDING/INFO: Update GPE FY 2008 Funding

From: "Forsyth, Sheila" sforsyth@APA.ORG Date: June 27, 2007 1:55:41 PM CDT To: DIVOFFICERS@LISTS.APA.ORG Subject: [DIVOFFICERS] Update GPE FY 2008 Funding Reply-To: "Forsyth, Sheila" sforsyth@APA.ORG

Dear Colleagues…

First, we want to thank you so very much for your continued support. Because of all your Congressional visits, emails and phone calls, the Graduate Psychology Education (GPE) Program has survived – despite an extremely tight budget and a very competitive appropriations process. Last week the Senate Labor HHS- Education Committee voted to maintain funding for the GPE at $1.8 million for FY 2008, as did the House earlier. And, while we are very disappointed that we did not gain an increase this year, we once again had an impressive range of bi-partisan support for maintaining the GPE program. From Democrats to Republicans, from conservatives to liberals, a growing number of Members in both the House and the Senate are voicing their support for the GPE Program.

Why is that? It's because psychologist-constituents like you are helping us keep the pressure on!

What's next? As we often say in our advocacy training workshops, sometimes a small victory is a big win. Maintaining funding for GPE when funding is tight is certainly a win. We will continue to build on the growing support we have in the House and Senate – and with your help find that Champion who will make GPE his/her top priority and get us the funding increase that the GPE program truly merits.

We will continue our efforts to find someone who will not only support GPE and work tirelessly to gain increased funding for this exemplary psychology education and training program, but someone whom we can identify as a true Psychology Champion. Again, thanks so much for taking time from your busy schedules to help us. We will be back in touch as we prepare for the next round!
