2013 Interdivisional Grant Program

The Committee on Division/APA Relations has released its Call for Proposals for the 2013 Interdivisional Grant Program. CODAPAR seeks proposals for collaborative projects sponsored by two or more APA divisions.  The purpose of the program is to support joint activities that enhance the work, interests, or goals of two or more divisions. Examples include, but are not limited to:

·         furthering APA’s goals of working to advance psychology as a science, a profession, and a means of promoting human welfare;

·         projects that promote collaboration between the science and practice of psychology;

·         fostering the recruitment of ethnic minorities into psychology, APA or division membership, or APA governance; and

·         activities that focus on a currently unaddressed topic or area in psychology.

 

Up to $25,000 will be awarded by CODAPAR to support projects in 2013 (typical projects are funded under $5,000). Proposals must meet the following requirements to be considered by CODAPAR:

·         Projects must be sponsored by at least two divisions.  Priority will be given to projects that demonstrate significant collaboration between the sponsoring divisions;

·         The projects may not duplicate an activity currently being undertaken by another APA office or group; and

·         The project must be completed within 12 months of receipt of funding. If projects will extend beyond 12 months, proposals must indicate which deliverable tasks will be funded by the grant in the initial 12 months of funding. Failure to complete the funded deliverable tasks within 12 months may render participating divisions ineligible for future IGP requests.

 

The attached Call provides a template for submission and further information. The deadline for applying for the 2013 IGP is September 14, 2012. The Department of PSYCHOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA invites applications for a full-time (9-mo) non-tenure accruing Lecturer position in Psychology beginning August 15, 2012. A Ph.D. in Psychology is required (area of specialization is open); salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Applicants should be able to teach Research Methods, Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, and General Psychology. This will be accomplished in various ways including on-line and classroom instruction, and supervision of graduate student instructors. Although not required, the position offers the opportunity to participate in other aspects of our department and its governance, including research activities in one’s area of interest if so desired. The Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Advisory Committee is currently seeking nominations for the 2012 Beckman award. The award is given to professors who inspired their former students to achieve greatness. Each recipient will receive a one-time cash award of $25,000 to be used at their sole discretion.

 

The Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Trust was established in 2008 under the will of Gail McKnight Beckman in memory of her mother, Dr. Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman. Wells Fargo Bank, NA serves as the Trustee. Dr. Beckman was an educator, a renowned author and a pioneer in the field of Psychology.

 

Gail McKnight Beckman created the Beckman award to benefit teachers who have inspired their former students to make a difference in their communities. The award is given to current or former academic faculty members who have inspired their former students to "create an organization which has demonstrably conferred a benefit on the community at large." Alternatively, academic faculty members must have inspired their former students to "establish on a lasting basis a concept, procedure, or movement of comparable benefit to the community at large."

                                                             

Each year the advisory committee prescreens the nominees for qualification. The former students of those nominees who are determined to be eligible will then be invited to submit an application package. The is to submit the nomination form by May 31 which is available at:

CONFERENCES: Latent Variable Methods Workshop (Boston MA July 25-27, 2012)

The 2012 Latent Variable Methods Workshop (Boston MA, July 25-27, 2012) is a three day workshop that provides an introduction to measurement models. Topics include factor analysis (exploratory [EFA], confirmatory [CFA], bifactor [BiFA]), Item Response Theory (IRT), multiple indicator, multiple cause models (MIMIC), and the detection of differential item functioning (DIF). Mixture (latent class) and Bayesian data analysis approaches will be covered.

The workshop includes a balance of lecture and laboratory time where participants can get experience estimating models drawn from lecture examples. Most examples are drawn from mental health and aging research. Mplus software will be used, and all examples and laboratory exercises will be capable of being run on the Mplus Demo version.

Registration is now open. The early bird registration deadline is 6/15/2012.

We are pleased to announce that, as a result of the many APA members in the psychology education and training community who contacted HRSA along with the efforts of APA staff, HRSA has modified the funding announcement for the Mental and Behavioral Health Education and Training Grant Program to include all accredited internships in psychology. To accommodate the modification, HRSA has also pushed the due date for applications back a week to June 22^nd and will be holding two Technical Assistance (TA) calls to assist with the application process. The TA calls will be held this Thursday, May 17^th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm and next Monday, May 21^st from 11:30am to 1:30pm.

As we continue through 2012, we are hoping to match or exceed our total membership from 2011!   If you have not renewed your membership, please consider doing so or joining as a new member!  As a long-time member of the Division myself, membership has allowed me to enjoy the multitude of professional benefits of Division 20 including job opportunities, faculty development, research training, and networking contacts that will help me throughout my career.

2.  International affiliates are also proficient in areas related to the mission of the Division and can contribute to the Division's objectives, but reside in a country outside of the United States.  International affiliates do not have to hold membership in the American Psychological Association to join Division 20.

Dues for both Professional and International Affiliates are the same as Divisional dues for full members (e.g., $44 per year), and confer many of the same benefits as Full Members, including subscriptions to Adult Development & Aging News as well as Psychology and Aging.  However, to reiterate: one does not have to join APA itself in order to be an Affiliate of Division 20!

Postdoctoral fellows are sought to participate in a geropsychology educational project funded by The Council of Professional Geropsychology Training Programs (CoPGTP) (PIs: Beaudreau & O'Hara).

Goals:  1) To identify gaps and areas of need in the geropsychology training of clinical research fellows. 2) To inform the development of specialized geropsychology research didactics.

Eligibility:  To be eligible, psychology fellows spend all or part of their fellowship time engaged in clinical research.  They also must identify aging or geropsychology as a primary or secondary area of interest.  

Participation: Study involves completion of a survey and a brief follow-up interview with a geropsychology research assistant (total estimated time: 60 minutes).

Incentive: A copy of the book "Effective Clinical Interventions in a Life-Stage Context: A Guide to Psychotherapy and Aging" or Fellows' choice of another book of equal value ($20.00).

APA Seeks Applicants for Graduate Student Public Interest Policy Internships for 2012-2013

The American Psychological Association’s Public Interest Government Relations Office (PI-GRO) is seeking two graduate student interns for the 2012-2013 academic year.  Graduate student interns will gain first-hand knowledge of the ways in which psychological research can inform public policy and the roles psychology can play in its formulation and implementation. The graduate student intern will spend one year working with PI-GRO staff to influence legislative and regulatory activities impacting populations and issues, such as: aging; children, youth, and families; disabilities; ethnic minorities; individuals with HIV/AIDS; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons; military, veterans and their families; socioeconomic status; women; as well as social concerns (e.g. media; or trauma, violence, and abuse). The intern’s activities include participating in legislative and advocacy work, such as assisting in the preparation of testimony and briefing papers and attending congressional hearings and coalition meetings.  Applications are due on March 23, 2012.

The Department of Psychology is seeking a leading scientist in the development of computational models of human behavior. We are particularly interested in a researcher whose work can be applied to technology-intensive learning environments to build rich models of how individual differences in cognitive and affective functions interact with technology. The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with other NC State researchers involved in the Digital Transformation of Education research cluster. In addition, the individual will serve as core faculty in the one of the department's five Ph.D.-granting specializations: lifespan developmental, human factors & ergonomics, industrial/organizational, school psychology, and psychology in the public interest.

While we anticipate hiring faculty at the Associate or Full Professor levels, candidates at the Assistant Professor level with exceptional research and funding records are also encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to have the following:

• A Ph.D. in an education, psychology, computer science, or a field closely related to the area of the application;
• Recognition as a pioneering leader in the development of new approaches to the relevant area within the broad framework of the digital transformation of education;
• Experience conducting innovative relevant work in a university, private sector, government, or non-profit organization;
• An established track record of success in funded research, publication and other measures of scholarly impact;
• Evidence of an ability to work with interdisciplinary collaborative teams, including collaborations across the university, private, non-profit, government, and education sectors;
• Strong capacity to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including the capacity to mentor doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows.

Urgent Funding Alert to the Psychology Education and Training Community:

 

We wanted to alert you that the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has announced the opening of the application process for the Mental and Behavioral Health Education and Training Grant Program. This new grant program is authorized in Sec. 756 of the recent healthcare reform law and is funded by already appropriated Fiscal Year 2012 funds. Applications are due by June 15^th.

 

The program aims to increase the number of psychologists and social workers who pursue clinical work with high need and high demand populations. For this funding opportunity, high need and high demand refers to rural, vulnerable, and/or underserved populations, and veterans, military personnel and their families. The Funding for this announcement is provided through the Affordable Care Act's Prevention and Public Health Fund (Section 4002 (42 U.S.C. 300 u-11).

The specific goal of the program is to strengthen the clinical field competencies of psychologists and social workers who pursue clinical service with high need and high demand populations.  This program recognizes the high need and high demand experienced by military personnel and veterans, as well as the impact of war and deployment on their families.

Subject: HRSA FUNDING ALERT FOLLOW-UP REGARDING ELIGIBILITY FOR THE MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH EDUCATION AND TRAINING GRANT PROGRAM

We at APA have received a number of questions regarding the eligibility requirements for the new Mental and Behavioral Health Education and Training Grant Program.

 

We have been in contact with staff at HRSA and asked for clarification. We received this response from them:

 

Eligibles are IHEs (Institutions of Higher Education) in psychology and social work. These IHEs are strongly encouraged to work with and influence APA accredited internships (independent, in med schools etc) to build more slots to accommodate the trainees who receive funding through the IHE.

 

We have since requested flexibility to allow internships to directly apply and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
