Call for Nominations

APA Presidential Task Force on Military Deployment Services for Youth, Families & Service Members

American Psychological Association (APA) President Gerald P. Koocher, PhD, ABPP is seeking nominations for the APA Presidential Task Force on Military Deployment Services for Youth, Families & Service Members. APA is particularly interested in receiving nominations of researchers, practitioners and educators whose work focuses on: 1) the provision of mental health services to children and families; 2) the unique mental health problems people with disabilities and their families face and the services needed to address them; 3) providing mental health services to ethnic minorities; 4) providing mental health services within school settings; and 5) ways to make mental health services more accessible to families in rural locations.

The Task Force will make use of existing APA resources, materials, and research, and available treatment methods and resources for service provision to create suggestions as to how to reach service members and their families in non-traditional treatment settings. Examples include setting up facilities at military reserve armories and local schools. The Task Force will also consider ways to reach out to service members within marginalized populations, such as ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities, and encourage the development of services specifically designed to meet their and their families' needs. Finally, the Task Force will suggest ways to supply military families with written information on mental health treatments and services, such as providing materials at military Family Assistance Centers and other activities and support sites.

Task Force members are required to attend one meeting in the Fall of 2006 to be held in Washington, DC with meeting related expenses reimbursed by APA, to participate in conference calls and to work on issues related to the charge of the Task Force outside the meeting.

Each candidate is asked to submit (1) a letter indicating his or her willingness to serve and highlighting their particular expertise, and (2) a current CV by no later than Wednesday, July 19, 2006. Candidates may wish to have a letter (not more than one) supporting their nomination submitted. Material may be sent electronically to Ms. Beth Nichols-Howarth in the APA Office of Policy & Advocacy in the Schools, Task Force on Military Deployment Services for Youth, Families & Service Members: bnichols-howarth@apa.org (202) 216-7609

INFO: Ethics and Interrogations: Comparing and Contrasting the APA, AMA and ApA Positions

Last year APA issued the PENS report, on the role of psychologists in military interrogations. Recently the American Psychiatric and American Medical Associations have issued position statements on this issue. For the July/August Monitor on Psychology, Stephen Behnke, Director of the APA Ethics Office, has written a column comparing and contrasting the three association positions. Given the level of member interest in this issue, the column is available now on the APA website (http://www.apa.org/) -- see top feature on the home page.
