JOBS: Cluster Hires at FSU in Acquiring and Maintaining STEM Expertise

To make a very long story short, Florida State University is in the process of trying to improve its standing as a public university and has put together a mechanism, Pathways of Excellence,

http://pathways.fsu.edu/ to try to build its base of faculty. Part of that process involves getting proposals from faculty for cluster hires. I'm part of a group dealing with "Acquiring and Maintaining Science Technology Engineering, and Math (STEM) Expertise Across the Lifespan". We are at the second stage of the proposal process. Thirteen of the original set were asked to prepare a second stage application, with about 6 expected to be funded. Our group would like to identify possible candidates who would fit with that theme. Cluster hires usually involve about 6 people, a few senior, and the rest mid-level and junior. If you or any of your students might be interested in this possibility, please let me know.

INFO: Please Help Save the GPE Program!

Dear Colleagues,

Once again, we need your help to save the Graduate Psychology Education (GPE) Program. As you know, recent budget cuts have put the GPE Program in jeopardy, with funding at a low of $1.8 million. However, in the past your grassroots support has helped us establish and sustain the program. Please respond immediately or NLT March 30th.

Responding is Quick & Easy: All you will need to do is send a prepared message to both your Senators. The message urges them to support $7 million funding to the Graduate Psychology Education (GPE) Program in the FY 2008 Labor-HHS-ED appropriations bill by signing onto a Dear Colleague letter that will be circulated by Senator Durbin.

The GPE Program is a competitive grant program, which supports the interdisciplinary training of graduate psychology students (doctoral and postdoctoral) and interns, with other health professionals. The focus of the training is on the provision of mental and behavioral health services to underserved persons (i.e., older adults, children, chronically ill persons, and victims of abuse or trauma including returning military personnel and their families) in urban and rural communities.

Please go to http://www.apa.org/ed/gpe_imprtant.pdf to take immediate action.

Thank you so much for your help at this critical time.

INFO: Applicants Sought for Editor of the American Journal of Psychology

Applicants Sought for Editor of the American Journal of Psychology

Deadline: May 1, 2007

The University of Illinois Press seeks applicants for the position of editor or co-editors of the American Journal of Psychology (AJP). The officialterm for the new editor would commence in January 2008 (transition wouldstart in June 2007) and is for a minimum of three years, with a possible reappointment of up to an additional three years.

Scope of AJP: AJP is published quarterly by the University of Illinois Press, a not-for-profit publisher. The American Journal of Psychology is the oldest psychology journal in the country. Founded in 1887 by G. Stanley Hall in the interest of general experimental psychology, it was edited in its early years by Edward Titchener, Edwin Boring, and Karl M. Dallenbach. AJP has published some of the most innovative and formative papers in the history of psychology. AJP explores the basic science of the mind, publishing reports of original research in experimental psychology, theoretical presentations, combined theoretical and experimental analyses, historical commentaries (edited by Alfred H. Fuchs, Bowdoin College), and in-depth reviews of significant books (edited by Dominic W. Massaro, University of California, Santa Cruz).

Qualification and requirements of candidates: Key qualities sought for the position of editor or co-editors: an established record of scholarship in the field of psychology; managerial skills to oversee the editorial cycle and meet deadlines; and the ability to attract respected experts to his or her editorial advisory board.

Major responsibilities of the future editor or co-editors of AJP include

  • managing the peer review of approximately 60-70 manuscripts per year,
  • soliciting high-quality manuscripts from potential authors, and (with the help of the UIP staff)

  • assisting these authors in seeing their manuscripts to publication,
  • deciding which manuscripts to publish,
  • selecting a sufficient pool of competent reviewers to reach conclusions and make decisions on manuscripts in a timely fashion,
  • identifying and appointing qualified members to the editorial advisory board,
  • providing a clear vision for the direction of the Journal.

Applicants should have recognized expertise in the field, possess editorial experience, and be able to lead an active editorial board in working effectively with publishing professionals. Applicants must have clear employer or institutional support for this activity for the duration of the three-year appointment, including release time as necessary and general office support.

Search procedure: Applicants will be reviewed by the Search Committee immediately after the deadline submission date.

The application packet should include:

* A Vision Statement: Set forth your goals and plans for the content of the Journal. This may include an assessment of the current strengths, weaknesses, or gaps that you plan to address and how you will operationalize your plan.

* Editor/Co-Editor Background Information: The name, affiliation, and other relevant information about the potential editor and, if applicable, co-editors. Describe the qualifications of each person that supports their inclusion. Evidence of the ability and experience of the editor and editorial team to provide sound judgment and guidance to potential authors. Please include a vita or resume for each proposed editor and/or co-editor. Vitae are not included in the five-page limit, and no standard form is required. Provide a clear description of the structure of the editorial office and responsibilities, as you envision them at this point.

* Institutional Support: It is important for candidates to consider and address the feasibility of serving as editor in light of the resources likely to be available to the editor candidate. The UIP does not pay for office space or release time, but can provide basic financial support for office resources as necessary to Journal editors. This support may include funds for clerical assistance, office supplies, postage, and telephone beyond what will be provided by the editor's home institution. Since the support offered by different institutions varies widely, you are encouraged to contact the Executive Office of your University as necessary in order to ensure the feasibility of your application.

Application packets (as described above) should be sent by May 1, 2007 to:

INFO: Call for Papers, European Journal of Cog. Psy., Ageing,Cognition & Neuroscience

    Call for Papers

The European Journal of Cognitive Psychology invites manuscripts for a special issue on Ageing, Cognition, and Neuroscience. Ageing is a universal complex multifaceted process that profoundly affects mind and brain of all individuals. Important discoveries are being made at different levels of research on cognitive aging: from the molecular/genetic level, to the cell, the synapse, the network, and the processing of information at the cognitive level. The ultimate goal in cognitive neuroscience is to understand this whole set of stages. We are not yet there. Most studies conducted so far have collected data at single levels only. One ambition with this Special Issue is to encourage researchers to report cognitive data that are related to neural data at other levels. The research reported may be empirical, theoretical or computational. It may focus on normal cognitive aging or pathology.

The guest editors of this special issue are Soledad Ballesteros, Lars-Göran Nilsson and Patrick Lemaire. The deadline for receipt papers is October 1, 2007. Papers can be submitted by e-mail to reviews@psypress.co.uk and further details on manuscript submission and instructions for authors can be found on the Journal website at www.psychopress.co.uk/ecp. Please, specify in your cover letter that the submission is intended for this special issue. All papers will be peer-reviewed.
